Strategic Support for the Development of Lithium Mining

The services provided by the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI) in northwestern Argentina are key in the implementation of large-scale mining projects. In mining operations—particularly in the advancement of lithium mining—companies must obtain a “Social License to Operate” (SLO) from local communities by honoring agreed commitments. These often include concrete obligations such as hiring local labor and sourcing from local suppliers. In implementing these production initiatives and major investments, INTI’s technical teams play a critical role in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta, and Catamarca.

“With in-depth knowledge of the territory and local stakeholders in each province, we support, assist, and advise all parties involved to help ensure the technical fulfillment of commitments made under the SLO,” explains Ramiro Casóliba, INTI’s Regional Deputy Manager for northwestern Argentina.

Two Pillars of INTI’s Support in the Region

INTI’s technical experts in the north work along two main axes:

  1. Supporting sectors that act as service providers for mining companies, and

  2. Knowledge-based work—including metallurgy, chemistry, structural engineering, technology, and equipment.

They also contribute to community improvement projects that address local needs for information and technical training—such as food processing techniques, leather tanning, and natural fiber processing.

Among local service providers, key sectors include:

  • Catering

  • Lodging

  • Logistics and transportation

  • Textile supply

INTI supports these sectors primarily through tools related to management technologies, project formulation, and business planning. These activities generate significant employment in regions where mining camps operate and hundreds of trucks move daily.

INTI also collaborates with companies that supply strategic equipment and geological services—including generators, pumps, and large-scale piping systems.

Strengthening the Lithium Triangle

Jujuy, Salta, and Catamarca form what is known as the “Lithium Triangle.” These regions host diverse communities that are active participants in the mining production circuit.

“Our goal is to help strengthen the mining value chain in the region. To achieve that, we offer a wide range of services—from assistance with obtaining the Social License to Operate, to packaging and container certification; quality management support; and even testing material resistance at high altitudes in extreme climate conditions—hot days and very cold nights,” adds Casóliba.

INTI also provides guidance on:

  • Environmental management (ISO 14000)

  • Integration of circular economy principles for solid waste in mines (ISO 59000)
