Catamarca Signs Agreement with India to Deepen Lithium Exploration

India and Argentina signed an agreement on Wednesday to enhance collaboration in the exploration and development of critical mineral resources, particularly lithium, according to an official statement.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in the presence of India’s Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, and the Governor of Catamarca, Raúl Alejandro Jalil.

Both parties discussed expanding cooperation in the mining sector, with a focus on lithium exploration and investment opportunities, the Ministry of Mines of India said in a statement.

“A key highlight of the meeting was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL)—a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Mines—and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina, which will pave the way for deeper collaboration in the exploration and development of critical mineral resources,” it stated.

Argentina, known for its vast lithium reserves, is a crucial partner for India in securing essential minerals required for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and renewable energy storage systems, the ministry emphasized.

The discussions included ongoing lithium exploration efforts in Catamarca by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL) and Greenko, as well as possibilities to increase Indian participation in mining projects across Argentina and streamline permitting processes.

Both sides explored investment opportunities, long-term supply agreements, and joint ventures aimed at strengthening India’s access to this vital mineral.

Senior officials from both countries also engaged in discussions on policy frameworks, regulatory aspects, and sustainable mining practices to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership.

Additionally, there was a strong emphasis on knowledge sharing and infrastructure support to enhance India’s role in Argentina’s mining sector.
